Camp
Dean is located in rural Kane County in Illinois. The land is about half
woodland and half prairie. The woods are primarily oak savanna. A creek runs
through the length of camp. A small pond is used for beginning canoe training
and fishing.
Resident camp begins in mid-June to the second week in August camp is closed to
troop camping when resident camp is in session.
Two cabins for troop camping, each with capacities of 32. Each cabin is heated, has hot and cold water.
Mattresses and full kitchens. A third cabin
has hot and cold running water, bunk beds and wood stove heat. Bathrooms are separate. It
has a capacity of 16.
Three tent sites have
capacity of 32 each. Each unit has cold water, a summer kitchen, 9 tents, Clivus
Multrum composting latrine and a wash station. They also include 2 fire scars and 4 picnic
tables. The tents have beds and sleep 4 people in 7 of them and 2 people in 2 of them. The
three sites accommodate a total of 96 people in tents.
The creek is a narrow shallow
creek where the girls love to go creek stomping. It is about 3 feet deep in the deepest
spot. The rest of the creek is about calf deep on a average size Junior Girl Scout. Fish
include carp, bullheads, blue gill, small mouth bass and turtles. Troop leaders
must have Basic Water Safety Course for this activity.
The pond is 2.25 acres. It
has a average depth of 11' and the deepest point is 19.5'. Canoes and kayaks are
available. No swimming is allowed in the pond. The pond has blue gill, crappie, large
mouth bass, and northern pike with a good balance of species. A life guard and
Basic Water Craft Safety certified individual must be present for all boating activities.
Camp is open to troops for
camping and day hikes during the school season. Troop leaders must have the
appropriate training(s) to utilize the facilities.
